Gold Panda

August 11, 2009

The weather this week has truly impressed me. I feel like I’m actually having a summer as opposed to one long spring. Thankfully I’ve also had a house free to myself for the past two weeks, its been liberating. I can’t wait to move to London in September, it’ll be a big lifestyle change to my current hedonistic state, but I can’t wait.

With the summer sun and long afternoons I stumbled across Golden Panda. Hazy, sunshine beats similar to Actress and Flying Lotus‘ more lo-fi productions. I’m happy to sit in the sun on a day like this and let this music take me to strange places with its offbeat melodies. Check it out before the sun dries out.

Peace

“I believe in techno. Deep Space Radio and the Packard Plant. Stick your head in the bass bin. Full-bodied machine music that’s just so damned physical. Faceless, clandestine signals issuing from black boxes. Banging loops and fractured, urgent voices. Hands and bodies everywhere, ears ringing, my head filled with the best kind of vertigo. Enormous, luxurious 303s and Junos tearing through everything, ricocheting off the concrete. It’s an asphalt and steel soundtrack. It’s music that keeps you working. That quivering, stretched-out bass. The thrill of working within a fixed grid of kick drums and high-hats: it’s a design problem, really. I believe in techno. Maybe it believes in me.”

Possibly the most captivating description of any genre I’ve ever read. Its an amazing blog, I almost don’t want to share it. But I believe in sharing. The music James Reeves posts isn’t the most up to date, as he aptly points out ‘techno has a short memory’ and often worthy tunes fall out of rotation. Read, listen, party.
